“Who owns this place?”
I shrugged. “Some landlord.”
He smiled. “Exactly.”
Then he leaned in and said something I’ll never forget.
“Wealthy people own land. The rest rent it.”
At first, I brushed it off. I thought it was just talk.
But then he pulled out his phone and showed me something that made my stomach tighten.
